Cultural mapping & Muloobinba cultural trail

Client: Greater Cities Commission (NSW State Government)
Location: Awabakal and Worimi Country
Completion Date: 2024

The Greater Cities Commission was seeking to map places and stories that hold cultural value and significance for Aboriginal communities in the Newcastle region. It was also intended to pilot a process for contracting projects in collaboration with Indigenous communities where the project outcomes are owned by the community.

Our role was to engage with community to determine the project scope, deliver the project once the scope had been determined, and document the process to share lessons with others.

Ultimately oral histories were recorded by community members with some connection to the area. Based on the stories, an artwork was commissioned and completed by a Traditional Knowledge holder, and each story was featured on a sign placed around Muloobinba (Newcastle) in a location that is connected to the story.
